Geography
At Gascoigne Primary School, we believe that Geography should aim to inspire pupils with a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Pupils are provided with a wealth of knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
Aims and Objectives:
At Gascoigne Primary, we are committed to providing our children with opportunities to stimulate their curious minds about the world around them. Therefore, through our teaching of Geography, we aim to:
- Develop children’s knowledge and understanding of places in local, regional, national, international, and global contexts.
- Enhance children’s understanding of the physical elements of geography, including weather and climate, water forms (oceans, rivers, lakes), landforms (valleys, mountains, plains, hills), and animal and plant life.
- Foster children’s understanding of human geography by exploring populations and settlements.
- Cultivate practical skills in using resources such as maps, atlases, and compasses, enabling them to apply these skills confidently and effectively.
- Develop children’s geographical skills through fieldwork and observations.
- Encourage research on local, national, and global issues, utilising resources, including ICT, to form opinions for debate.
- Promote an awareness of their responsibilities as global citizens.
EYFS
Children learn about similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials, and living things. They discuss the features of their immediate environment and explore variations between different environments. Through observation, they study animals and plants, explaining natural occurrences, and discussing changes.
Key Stage One
Pupils at Gascoigne Primary School develop knowledge about their own locality in Barking, the United Kingdom, and the world. They acquire basic subject-specific vocabulary related to human and physical geography and begin to use geographical skills, including first-hand observation, to enhance their locational awareness.
Key Stage Two
In Key Stage Two, pupils are provided with the opportunity to expand their knowledge and understanding beyond the local area to encompass the United Kingdom, Europe, North and South America. This involves learning about the location and characteristics of various significant human and physical features worldwide. Our pupils further develop their use of geographical knowledge, understanding, and skills to enhance their locational and place knowledge.
